Optimising a website for Google - any suggestions?

I am always looking for ways to improve my website's Google ranking - ideally I'd love for my site to be on the first page of Google searches! I don't have the budget for full Search Engine Optimisation so am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for things that I can do myself to improve my site's ranking.
